Gap Year Volunteering

Archaeology

Why archaeology?

A gap placement is a fantastic way to explore archaeology, whether you’re thinking about it as a future career, are already studying at university, or are qualified, and want a dig in a different country. If you’re just interested in the skills of unearthing centuries of human history, a gap placement could be great for you too, as no experience is required, except a willingness to get your hands dirty!

What you’ll be doing

You’ll start by setting out an area to dig, then roping it off into sections. You’ll then begin to dig down, forming a miniature cliff in the hole called the ‘profile’. In the profile, you’ll be able to see layers of human existence, right from the stone age to modern times, and uncover what the ground’s been hiding. You’ll also get the chance to try and reconstruct the items you find, and deduce their age and origins. All equipment is provided, and volunteers get their very own trowel!

Weather

Let’s face it – we all know the weather is in the UK is usually bad, but most definitely unpredictable! Hardly the best environment to dig. A gap dig will almost certainly be in a country where the climate of the seasons and the day’s weather are much easier to predict, meaning you can get the maximum out of your trip away, and spend as much time as possible digging.

Location and Culture

Gap archaeological digs are located in many places, for example, the university town of Brasov, in Romania, which has a fascinating history. Dig here, and you might unearth anything from Neolithic ruins and Roman walls to medieval chamber pots!

Extras

As you’re working, you’ll be documenting what you’ve done, writing reports and proposing new sites to study. You’ll also be able to help work on restoration projects. Finally, it’s possible to get some work experience on a gap archaeology placement. There might be a chance to help out with administration in a museum, a fascinating and invaluable job, that’ll make your CV shine!
