Journalism

What will you be doing?

On a journalism placement you will be working for a newspaper, magazine, radio station or TV channel on breaking news, local events and culture and arts writing. You’ll be spending your days in the offices alongside native journalists, learning about country and area specific issues and stories, and helping out with English speaking, spelling and grammar.

Speak another language, such as French or Spanish? A journalism placement is a great way of expanding or practising your knowledge, as not all placements are for English language media.

Broadcast and Print Placements

If you want to get into TV or radio work, expand your portfolio or just share your knowledge and skills, apply for a broadcast placement. You may be able to work with a wide range of broadcasters, both well respected public stations and new private ventures as a writer or presenter.

With a print placement, you’re likely to be working on a weekly English language newspaper or magazine. You’ll be writing stories, interviewing the public and helping out other journalists. You will also have the freedom to write on issues that interest you, such as human rights, as pages always need filling.

Due to the size of many publications and stations overseas, you’re likely to be able to work on relatively big stories and programmes, as well as being able to go down your own route much more freely.

Use your technical knowledge

Unsure about your technical training? On a journalism placement you can gain real insights into how a TV or radio station works and get in on the process of broadcasting, learning about lighting, sound, cameras, make up, rehearsals and planning, without an expensive course.

Improve your portfolio

Every volunteer will be guaranteed to leave with a portfolio of pieces with which to wow editors back home. Your time away will involve covering stories and working with people UK journalists don’t usually encounter, making your pieces and programmes stand out from the average portfolio.
